“Posture is not structure, but posture points the way to structure.”

What is the meaning of this saying? Structure is one of the six qualities of internal martial arts. It is related to, but not identical with, posture. Posture is something like a good first order approximation for structure. However, it is possible to have posture without having structure (you could have proper alignment and still collapse), and structure without posture (you can appear to be bent all out of shape externally, but still establish structure internally). Structure is an internal, energetic phenomenon that includes and transcends the external qualities of alignment and posture. So if you can feel structure, then follow that. If you aren’t sure if you can feel structure yet, then focus on posture and alignment and you’ll at least be in the ballpark. This is the meaning of “Posture is not structure, but posture points the way to structure.”
